Review quote

"Had me hooked from the very first page." -- New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur "M. J. Scott's SHADOW KIN is a steampunky romantic fantasy with vampires that doesn't miss its mark -- I loved it." -- New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs "M. J. Scott weaves a fantastic tale of love, betrayal, hope, and sacrifice against a world broken by darkness and light, where the only chance for survival rests within the strength of a woman made of shadow and the faith of a man made of light. Lovers of fantasy, romance, and magic will fall into these pages and never want to come out again." -- National bestselling author Devon Monk "The solid worldbuilding creates a believable city and mix of cultures. All in all, it's a compelling read from first page to last." -- New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishopshow more

OK, first thing I want to ask is where is the next in this series? I'm hankering to read it after devouring this book and I want to find out if Guy gets his own story! :-) MJScott crafts a rich, complex world filled with intriguing characters. It has a vague steampunk-y Victorian feel to it but there's a whole other side to it that places it squarely in the fantasy realm. The characters types are familiar (ie.vampires, fae, wraiths, humans etc.) but each have a different twist that makes them unique. The main characters - Lily and Simon - are both easy to identify with. Lily is a wraith and a slave to Lucius, a vampire leader. He binds her to him through blood and fear/abuse and uses her as his assassin. Simon is a human sunmage who once trained as a Templar knight but due to a personal tragedy never ended up taking his final vows but instead became a healer to help all who needed him, regardless of race. I have to admit I empathised more with Lily, her past sucked me in and I loved watching her discover herself and realise that she wanted more than just to survive (all thanks to Simon's friendship & their growing romantic relationship). Having spent her entire life in survival mode, trust and the softer emotions aren't part of her world but after meeting Simon her world begins to change. The Templar knights, in particular Guy, (Simon's brother) fascinated me. I'm wondering if he will get his own story in this series. There was a lot to like about SHADOW KIN - the plot arcs, the characters, the world building - and I'd highly recommend this book if you like fantasy, or fantasy romance reads along the lines of Elizabeth Vaughan's WARPRIZE series or Robin D.Owens HEART series.show more
