Our YA LGBTQIA+ Book Recommendations!
by @tata.lifepages a.k.a. Thais | Posted on 13th August 2021

Hello readers! This month, I have compiled a list of some of my recent LGBTQIA+ reads that I absolutely loved! You will find a good mix in this list, including indie books, new releases and even some older gems of LGBTQIA+ rep!

This Golden Flame

by Emily Victoria
This Golden Flame Book Cover Our list starts off with a 2021 release, This Golden Flame, with #aroace representation! If you are looking for a great fantasy without a main romance, I recommend this book!

The story follows an orphan Karis who finds and awakens an automaton, Alix. Alix is an intelligent and thinking machine that feels human. Karis is in constant search for her brother who was separated from her when taken by the Scriptorium. Now she serves them as one of their acolyte’s, who are desperately trying to reanimate an ancient humanoid army. A world filled with automatons and magic, an adventurous read!

“Orphaned and forced to serve her country's ruling group of scribes, Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, long ago shipped away. But family bonds don't matter to the Scriptorium, whose sole focus is unlocking the magic of an ancient automaton army. In her search for her brother, Karis does the seemingly impossible--she awakens a hidden automaton. Intelligent, with a conscience of his own, Alix has no idea why he was made. Or why his father--their nation's greatest traitor--once tried to destroy the automatons. Suddenly, the Scriptorium isn't just trying to control Karis; it's hunting her. Together with Alix, Karis must find her brother...and the secret that's held her country in its power for centuries.”

Malice Book Cover Another 2021 release, Malice is a sapphic Sleeping Beauty retelling, told in the villains’ perspective. I really enjoyed how Malice has a dark and sinister atmosphere, giving it a completely new take on the original story.

The story follows Alyce, also known as the Dark Grace. She uses dark magic and is seen as an evil sorceress by the townsfolk of Briar. There are few who treat her with kindness, one of them is Princess Aurora.

“A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this darkly magical retelling of “Sleeping Beauty,” true love is more than a simple fairy tale.

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.
You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily-ever-after.
Utter nonsense.
Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

Until I met her.
Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.

Nonsense again.
Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I—
I am the villain.”

First Came Forever

by Annie Woods
First Came Forever Book Cover Next on our list we have a contemporary romance that I read a little while ago that completely surprised me! This is the first book in a trilogy, the Angelheart Saga, perfect for binge reading!

This might seem at first like a typical love story, however you will discover that it is a rollercoaster! The trilogy is full of intriguing drama with a high school theme setting, passion, betrayals, LGBTQIA+ rep, royal families and many plot twists!

“First love. A promise of forever. A lie that changes everything.

Backpacking with her high school friends, Erica Lindell's life takes a thrilling new turn. Meeting the fascinating Sasha Ailes, she can't help but fall completely and irrevocably in love with him. When he feels the same way about her, Erica finds herself drawn into a fairytale love story that will set her life on a new direction. But Sasha has kept his true identity a secret. The Veiled Threat

by Sophia Menesini
The Veiled Threat Book Cover For those who love a sea-themed setting combined with lots of action and a sapphic steamy romance, I recommend The Veiled Duchess series! This was one of my favorite #indie reads!

The Veiled Threat follows the story of Shea Lara, a dangerous and beautiful elf who is captain of the Veiled Duchess. Shea is a sassy and witty pirate, the perfect morally gray character! This is an action packed female empowering read, full of chemistry and romance!

“Captain Shea Lara is the current leader of The Veiled Duchess. The most feared pirate ship in all of Neried. And now, after completing her former mentor's final score, she's retiring. Everything seems to be coming to an end... Until a mysterious stranger drags her back into the fold with an offer for a score she can't refuse. All she has to do is kidnap the crowned princess of the “northern Queendom, Princess Joana of Arethusa. The prize is just within reach. But sparks fly as the two women collide. And an obscured threat that could upturn Shea's entire world storms on the horizon. She'll face it alone unless she can allow herself the support she needs from old and new allies alike. The Witchling's Girl

by Helena Coggan
The Witchling's Book Cover Next on our list we have another 2021 release that I loved, a haunting and atmospheric read with a beautiful and intense writing style. This gorgeous book has a bisexual female-lead, Haley, who is to become the village’s next witchling.

The witchling has the power to heal, as well as to transport and guide the dead to the underworld. As we follow Haleys journey as an witchling apprentice, some dark and mysterious things start to happen! A heartfelt read that gave me goosebumps!

“In a quiet street far from the river, with an ancient tree growing through its walls and floors, is the House of the Dead. There lives the witchling: healer, midwife and conduit between the world of the living and the world below. A witchling must give up her family and friends and spend her life alone, tending to the sick and carrying the dead down dark tunnels to the underworld.

Haley was born with the gift of death-magic, and at the age of seven her mother abandons her to the witchling to be raised as her successor. But as Haley grows older and learns her craft - as invading armies pass through her town, people are born and die on her floor, and loyalties shift and dissolve around her - she finds it harder and harder to keep her vows and be the perfect and impassive healer.

But if she can't, it will be her downfall - and that of everyone she's not supposed to love.”
