For a good fantasy read I can recommend Songs of the Earth by Elspeth Cooper. It's the first (debut) book of a trilogy. I am not a fan of fantasy but thoroughly enjoyed this and am looking forward to book 2 out in Junr 2012.

Watch out in May for 'Snakes Ropes', published by Sceptre, the stunning debut novel by Jess Richards, one of the most exciting and original talents to emerge in recent years. A compelling, beautifully written fantasy with dark and disturbing psychological undertones, demonstrating a truly poetic sensibility. A contemporary classic in the making. You read it here first!

this looks like books to avoid Having Hilary Mantel and Martin Amis (classics of turgid prose) in the email was a warning sign. I only found one I would consider. 2012 looks like a bleak year.
