Excerpt from The Zoology of to-Day: Opening Lecture for the Session 1918-19, Delivered Before the Faculty and Students of the University of Manitoba, October 9th, 1918
When it was determined to print this address it was also suggested to me that it would be an advantage to indicate where further information on the subjects touched upon could be found, so that it would also act. To a certain extent, as a guide in reading. This has been done by the addition of foot-notes. The works referred to by no means constitute an exhaustive list of the literature, which would, as a matter of fact, occupy several large volumes in itself. It is hoped that the references will give access to much of the recent work that is in language not too tech nical for the ordinary University reader to follow, and that is available in the University, and the quotations also emphasize the urgent need for the support of research in this country. In certain cases it has been impossible to avoid the mention of purely technical papers.
