"Sir," said the sailor who had acted under the impulse of genuine feelings in striking his comrade, " there have been several shipwrecks, for that matter, within a fortnight, and many souls have been saved and many have gone to ' Davy's Locker.' But, while our vessel has been in this port--which has been now many days, partly owing to the weather and partly on account of not getting in her cargo--I set sail with my dear comrades, as my_ captain gave permission--God bless him--in a small cutter, and paid a visit to Minorca. I have a mother living there, your worship, a good old soul as ever scud under the weather-sheet of fortune! Our captain told us we must not stay over a certain length of time, as things might turn with wind and tide;--that is, sir, he alluded to having the blessing of a full cargo, and that the weather which had been dark and tiemendously stormy, might clear away, giving us a bright and glorious atmosphere, when he would wish to depart for the turbaned kingdom. You are, of course aware, that a few days only have been clear and promising--that the last two weeks have been made up of rain, thunder and lightning, at intervals, that warned the mariner and 'Jack Tar, ' to cleave to the coast.
