Having worldly prospects of a cheering kind, together with the warmest benevolence of heart, many a prayer of tender solicitude was breathed in secret for her welfare and preservation. But Death--insatiate death--often seizes first upon the fairest flowers. Inexorable, even though floods of tears were poured out to make an atonement, pungent sorrows awaken no relentings in his imperious will. We saw that the victim was doomed for prey. The arrow quivered long in her breast, and grim consumption revelled in mimic majesty, enthroned on her heart. How pretty, we inwardly exclaimed as we gazed upon her face while labouring under that flattering disease. And yet, the calm serenity of her mind most excited our admiration. Whilst alternating betwixt hopes of being spared for a few years, and the prospect of A REVIVAL OF RELIGION. 63 being soon cut off, she evinced the most decisive traits of that religion which taught her submission to the will of Him who is "too wise to err, too good to be unkind." Confined for a long time from the house of God, and that at a period the most interesting to a young disciple, she was often cheered by the tidings of many of her associates in the Sabbath School becoming members of the Church. The spread of the Saviour's kingdom would always cheer her heart; but when told that a person to an union with whom she was looking forward with some prospect of happiness, was seriously enquiring after the great realities of religion, she wept for joy, exclaiming with peculiar energy and feeling, " Oh then I shall now soon be better.
