Review Text

This is no casually scribbled notebook; Huntington Hartford is an earnest and learned graphologist who approaches his subject with the high seriousness of a medieval scholastic presenting a dense research treatise. Hartford engages throughout in doctrinal disputes with fellow graphologists (Robert Saudek, Klara Roman, Harry Brooks) on how to interpret the slant, the pressure, the spacing, rhythm and connective forms ("garlands" and "arcades") and just what it is that you reveal as you cross the t and dot the i. Not till the closing section does the book get to be fun as Hartford provides readings of the penmanship of Hugh Hefner ("a square"), Barry Goldwater ("a creative person"), Zsa Zsa Gabor ("not mercenary," she lacks "the long lower loops of materialism"), William Buckley ("all the ego in the world"). And did you know that "perverts" write with light-pressure or that Hartford could tell that his Swedish cook Ellen was depressed and sad by the downward slant of her lines, or that when Dick Nixon writes his "D" he reveals a "craving for power"? That at least we can believe. For those who've grown weary of astrology, a new old fad perhaps? (Kirkus Reviews)show more
