This is the 56th volume of this publication which reviews the work of the United Nations and its programmes and bodies during 2002. It is divided into six parts which deal with: international political and security questions; human rights; economic and social issues such as development policy, humanitarian assistance, environment and human settlements, refugees and displaced persons; legal matters including the International Court of Justice, international tribunals, and the Law of the Sea; institutional, administrative and budgetary questions; and intergovernmental organisations related to the UN. Events during the year 2002 included the establishment of the independent state of Timor-Leste (formerly East Timor) and the holding of its first democratic elections, the entry into force of the Statute of the International Criminal Court, landmark conferences held on financing for development (in Monterrey) and sustainable development (in Johannesburg). It is fully indexed with references to all major General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council resolutions issued during the year.
