Review Text

Within the framework of an Australian adventure involving pinning down the disputed ownership of an old silver mine and the surrounding land, the author has managed to show off four very believable children as they develop both independently and within the family. Readers will probably sympathize most with the oldest, fourteen year old Elizabeth, who is at loose ends with apparently no particular interests or skills of her own, the only member of the family directed toward a special talent. But the others, from eight year old Chess on up have their own special appeal. Particularly notable is the fact that the children always maintain a realistic relationship with the adults of the story, and they are well drawn too - the parents, a swagman, an old Chinaman patiently devoting his life to a dream of finding more silver in a mine, and others. Despite some weaknesses (the process of discovering the missing deed to the land offers practically no suspense, and the story is slowed down by the author's wordy descriptions) readers will find this family warmly entertaining.
