This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: glad to know of it.--w. H. H. The following sentence is clipped from an old number of a local paper: --Arthur W. Gates, son of the late Dennis S. B. Gates, and Ida B. Raymond, daughter of Rufus Raymond who with her mother is deceased, had a private little wedding last Saturday evening, Washington's birthday, at 7, at the house of the latter s aunt, Miss Carrie Howland, High street, by the Baptist pastor, Rev. A. T. Filmer. It may be necessary to say in explanation that the father had two wives. He and his first wife, the girl's mother, are dead. Is the sentence grammatically correct? If not, where and why is it incorrect? How can all the points contained in it be included in one correct sentence? If the sentence is not up to the purist's standard, will it pass for ordinarily correct newspaper English? D. L. c. The sentence quoted is an unusually bad specimen of bad newspaper English. Grammatically, the clause, ' who with her mother is deceased," and the phrase, " had a wedding by the pastor," are incorrect. "The latter" apparently refers to The Father of His Country. There would be no reason or excuse for including in one correct sentence all the facts given.--w. H. H. Do the characters in "Charles Auchester" represent real persons? E. T. F. It has been said that " Charles Auchester" represents Herr Joachim; "Seraphael," Mendelssohn; "Aronach," Zelter; "Porphyro," Napoleon III.; "Starwood Burney," Sterndale Bennett; "Diamond Albany," Disraeli; "Rodomant," Beethoven; "Milans Angre-," Moscheles; "Clara Bennett," Jenny Lind; "Maria," Beethoven's sister.--w.
