Review Text

A new adventure story again offers some excellent excitement and the sea this time is an implacable opponent and the final repository of the many dark deeds which led to the wreck of the Mary Deare. John Sands boards what appears to be a phantom ship in the middle of a channel crossing, is stranded on what is at best a floating scrap-heap with her only survivor, the truculent Patch, who cannot save her as she is washed up on the rocks. The death of her captain, the desertion of her crew, the nature of her cargo, and the dubious traffic of her owners behind the Bamboo Curtain leave many unanswered questions- not only to Sands as Patch proves uncommunicative- but to the court when a formal enquiry is launched. Sands goes along with Patch, on faith, and it is finally on a dangerous run out to the Mary Deare that Patch is able to redeem his record and return his debt to Sands.... A stormy tale of damaged men and a desperate enterprise which will justify and satisfy his following and attract the newer audience of those who enjoyed Sea-Wyf. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
