The journal records Ben Pearson's experiences of the First World War. From enlisting, on his eighteenth birthday, in 1915 he was to join the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He recounts his part in the battles of Arras, Messines and Ypres. Later he transferred to the Royal Air Force but when his plane was shot down he was captured by the Germans. The journal was written in Karlsruhe POW camp where Ben Pearson spent the final months of the war.
