Description

Rather than narrating a history of the Great War, each of the seven volumes is devoted to a single offensive (they are First Ypres, Mons, Gallipoli, Verdun, Jutland, Megiddo, and Kaiserschlacht). The author of each volume (their affiliations are not noted) describes the events leading to the battle, the strategies of both sides, the composition of the armed forces involved, the details of the campaign, the battlefield today, and wargaming the campaign. The volumes include detailed color maps, tables of the order of battle, a chronology, a list of further reading, and copious period photographs. Praeger's Illustrated Military History Series, which will comprise a number of such sets as this, will be a useful resource for college students and all interested in military history. These volumes are reprints of books published originally by Osprey Publishing Ltd in the UK between 1991 and 2003. Each is 96 pages. The volumes are also available individually. Review quote

?This impressive series fills a long-vacant niche in American history classes by providing junior and senior high school students with detailed and comprehensive information covering American involvement in most of the main battles and battlefronts....Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white photographs, maps, black-and-white sketches, and realistic colored illustrations, the books are written in an engaging and easily accesible style, providing more than a basic introduction but yet not so much as to be overwhelming for their target audience....[a] valuable resource for elementary research and would be a wonderful addition to a public library or large school media center collection.?-VOYAshow more
