I shall, in this chapter, treat of the Spirit of Counsel not only as in connection with the purposes of Jehovah Jesus; but also with respect to His gracious dealing with His people, with whom He takes counsel; and to whom He imparts wisdom and suggests blessed thoughts of Himself and of our God and Father, together with many a wise direction as to our walk in the Churcb, and towards the world. Thus we hold communion with Him in the power of the Holy Ghost; Who, proceeding from the Father and the Son enables us to take and receive counsel. This, He the Spirit of counsel will assuredly effect, and He will effect it in power in accordance with faith which expects it, united with such a walk as grieves not the Holy Spirit of God, and is in subjection to Himself. Where the Spirit of counsel is, there is, moreover, the Spirit of might. This word is also pregnant with a sense of strength, suggesting the truth that the God, to Whom power belongs, can never design or direct anything which He cannot perform. We must therefore regard this might as connected with all His revealed purposes, the carrying out of which is certain, even when appearances to the contrary may discourage and try faith. His Almightiness assures the fulfilment of every promise, and impresses it upon every confiding heart, to its unspeakable comfort. His words are engraved in the Eock of Ages. 'Hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?' The certainty and fficiency of every thing and every word, as connected with God; and the uncertainty and failure of every thing as connected with man, when speaking or acting in his own strength; are two truths which are taught most clearly in the Word of God, and are learnt by...
