Marcel Schnick is a former international aid worker in the early 21st century, who has taken it upon himself to reinvent human civilization in a remote village near the Zambian/Angolan border. Meanwhile in the early 20th century, amateur archaeologist Henry Ander attempts to revise human history, refocusing the narrative of mankind's spiritual and technological evolution around a syncretic god patterned in part after Christopher Columbus. As Ander pursues relic pterodactyl populations in Zambia's Juindu swamps and builds a cryptic Minoan palace in concrete in Delaware's Brandywine Valley, Marcel's village supplies America's art market with a steady stream of hand-drawn images of witchcraft, while simultaneously and unwittingly preparing for an assault upon rapidly emerging cell phone infrastructure. Winterwood is a dark, disturbing, cerebral voyage into the violent madness of colonial tendencies.
