Review Text

Wigger is a talking pink blanket, separated from orphaned Susanna when a bank robber grabs the worn piece of wool for a mask, but eventually returned - after being used as a duchess' jewel bag, a hotel maid's dust cloth and a lonely artist's mountaintop flag - just in time to stop Susanna from drowning in her unshed tears. The book's format - now the print and now the pages occasionally blushing to match Wigger's hue - reflect the cloying worst of Goldman's story, which is one of those unabashedly far-fetched and sentimental originals that often result when grownup authors write for children.
