Church against which the gates of Hell never shall prevail and which the Holy Ghost is to guide in all truth to the end of time. He always believed - for the Scripture so declares that as there is only one shepherd, so there is only one fold or true Church. For a long period of his life, he conceived that he was of this Fold, that he was a member of this true Church - the Spouse of Christ. But when be seriously reﬂected, and saw that the Church to which he belonged was founded upon human law, and depended for its success upon such pre carious support, his mind became disquiet and unfixed; and he resolved, with the assistance of the grace and blessing of God, to labour unceasingly until he should succeed in disco vering which was the catholic church.
