Over where the waters from the ocean and river mingle lies a stretch of yellow-white sand, covered deep with ocean shells, and where the sand-bar slopes into the water are hundreds of gaunt, hungry-looking pelicans, raising their great bills and flapping their enormous wings at the mere thought of a possible intrusion upon their privacy. This is Gilbert's Bar, and away in the ocean, a mile or more, stretches the Great Gilbert's Bar Shoal, the very name of which is a terror to sailors along this coast. We have not seen another human being in our day's voyage, and now in the dull gray of the cloudy twilight it looks lonely enough, and we seem miles away from everywhere and everybody. As darkness gathers, the wind is lulled, and, as we stand upon the deck and listen to the beating surf of the ocean, every little wave is crowned with a coronet of jewels as it breaks around our yacht. Fondy takes a rope, trails it through the water, and it becomes a fiery serpent. He fills a pail, and holding it on high pours from it a wealth of diamonds. These strange transformations are due, not to Aladdin's wonder lamp, but to the phosphorescent salt water, and are phenomena visible only upon the darkest nights. With returning day all nature smiles again, and what a change there is in the landscape when she is in a happy mood! This morning she has dipped her brushes deeply into her paint-box, and now spreads out before our admiring eyes her choicest color effects in blues, greens and dainty yellows.
