"Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." The knowledge of good was present already. Evil was the only additional element which remained to be known. We who transgressed, that we might "know good and evil" now pray to be delivered from the evil that we have so long known. In the evil here described we include Satan and all the system in which he moves; the wickedness of the wicked one in all its influence and in all its effects. There is no reason to doubt that human suffering and misery are to a very large extent, if not altogether, the work of him who has the power of death, the devil. We read in Scripture of the "evil day," that is, the day when we need to stand up against Satan " in the whole armour of God." His angels are "evil spirits." The oppression and unkindness which move men to strife are his wickedness. His servants are an "evil generation," and all his deeds in general are "deeds of darkness" We ourselves acknowledge this in a very curious way. Whenever any great calamity occurs, what pains and time we spend to throw light upon it. How we ransack everything that can possibly give us a clue to the cause of the mischief done. And how often the calamities that befall us remain "deeds of darkness" to the last. Preventible in so many ways, but not prevented, and not to be accounted for in the way they actually occurred.
