Mr. Pennefather wrote thus in October, 1841. The description gives a fair picture of the same kind of meetings of Irish teachers held three times every year since that date in every Mission district-throughout twelve counties of Ireland; of meetings held by the present writer in many of those districts during July, August, and September, 1878. Ireland has undergone a great social revolution during the last thirty-seven years. In many parts English education has rapidly spread throughout the population. Hence the Irish Society has retired from the counties named above, in order to penetrate the more benighted and neglected districts. At present it employs, besides a large staff of Scripture Readers, Schoolmasters, etc., and some Missionary Clergymen, about 216 teachers of Irish schools, with about 7,000 pupils. But the words "school," "teachers," "pupils," as ordinarily understood, convey a very imperfect idea of what is intended in connection with this work. An explanation of the machinery, perfectly unique and novel, will excite surprise, and may excite a smile. What is a school? The term often signifies an assembly of children collected in a room for education by a master or mistress.
