Review Text

Compact, factual and well-equipped with glossary, scale drawings and a list for further reading, this intermediate level essay should hold its own among the many available titles on whales and dolphins. Clear explanations of how we know that whales evolved from land animals, how dolphins are trained and how the various species of whales differ are mixed with lively incidentals - such as a chart on identifying species of whales by the way they spout water, and the language of the old time whalers who were pulled by a harpooned whale on a dangerous "Nantucket sleighride" until they raised the death cry of "his chimney is afire." Unlike some older books, this ends with a stem conservationist warning, and the clearly defined subject divisions will help students to find their way. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
