Beck speaks favourably of Dakin's solution as a mouth-wash in pyorrhoea; it cleanses the tissues, lessens both the bleeding and inflammation. He uses it every four hours before prophylactic treatment is attempted. H. J. Kauffer extols their use in root filling. The canal being opened, then the apex is irrigated with Dakin's solution and sealed with an absorbent point soaked in the antiseptic. After a few days this is repeated until examination of the point shows it to be sterile. Chronic alveolar abscesses also yield to this treatment.
