PEnnEa.-.1 LTHOUGH it is not my purpose to enter into a " lengthy discussion on the relations between the world of matter and the world of mind, I believe that a few words on the influences of West Indian scenery will not be without use, though they may not appeal very strongly to those who concern themselves almost entirely with practical questions, bearing on our vital interests and the perplexing problems which are daily demanding more and more imp_eratively an immediate solution. In this direction I am well aware that there is ample field for a full and comprehensive treatment of many questions that are supremely important. At the same time, there is no reason why practical questions and problems of political economy should not sometimes give place to those higher demands of our nature which derive their importance from man's consciousness as a spiritual being, dwelling simultaneously in the world of matter and in the world of mind. In this respect I do not refer to the claims of religion, the value of which is beyond question, and beyond all calculation. The point that I desire to make, in as brief and clear a manner as possible, is simply that, although the connection may seem a remote one, there is a very real and very intimate relation between our tropical surroundings and certain states of mental and spiritual receptivity to which I shall refer more fully as I proceed; and which, it seems to me, are not sufficiently realized and appreciated. In a very large measure we are all creatures of circumstance, and although there is that within every man which insures the power of resistance, even under the most trying conditions, it is perfectly clear that there is within every cultivated mind an impressionable quality...
