For this enjoyment it was merely necessary for her to retain her faith in the charms of her lingering youth. With this view she had become (in secret, so far as her husband was concerned) the half-believing disciple of a sect known as the Christian Scientists. So far as the doctrines of this remarkable body have been revealed to me, I gather that faith aided by prayer is their one remedy. The more advanced holders of these tenets, by stretching their creed to its limits, have persuaded themselves that the prolongation of youth is merely a question of faith. In other words, they believe that you can remain young just so long as you are persuaded that you are not old. If religion is intended for the comfort of humanity, no creed could be better suited to smart women, among whom, I am informed, many converts have been made. It is far more successful in dealing with wrinkles and crow's-feet than the steam kettle or.the most expert masseuse. The former, with faith and prayer, reaches the root of the trouble; the latter merely treat a relaxed integument. This, at least, I gather from the half-whispered colloquies of Lady Treadaway and Lady Smythe. Even " smartness " has its mysteries. Those who believe its glamour is all on the surface are merely superficial observers, and it is not for me, tolerant as I am, to deny even to the most worldly a religion of their own. But whatever doctrines my aunt had adopted, she was careful not to display them before so practical a family as the Treadaways. Yesterday was Sunday, and my aunt took me to church parade.
