He cast a desperate, agonized, appealing glance at his wife, but she was just laughing at one of her tall companion's jokes, and had apparently forgotten that such a thing as a baby ever existed. "Don't he want to come and sit with me awhile? " cooed the maiden lady, undismayed. "I presume he misses hia mother's care, though too young to understand the loss.
