The 'Walkure' was of the semi-whaleback type, 350 feet by 49 feet by 24 feet. The whaieback shoulder, or harbor deck, was employed in the salving of this vessel. In other words, a false hull. or cofferdam, was constructed from the harbor deck to the water's surfacc, then the water was pumped out of this structure, until it began to rise of itself, thus proving Archimedes' principle that an object floats only by displacing its weight of water. "The engineer who undertook this salvage job took into account the tide and weather conditions in Papeete harbor, which _were favorable to the scheme, The cofferdam 'extended 307 feet along the harbor deck, being 14 feet high forward and 32 feet high aft, with an additional V-shaped section to encompass the stern. This assured a displacement of about 6,700 tons of yater, which was more than enough to raise the ship and dam combined. Work was begun on November 8, 1915, and the ship was afloat on January 11, 1916. She has been renamed 'Republic' and is now under American registry. The submerged hull was purchased for $30,000, the salvage work and refitting cost $225,000.
