Description

Trading life in the fast lane of Johannesburg for that of Rotterdam's serene Oude Haven, Valerie Poore packs all her worldly possessions aboard the historic Dutch barge Hoop and sets about rebuilding both the boat and her life after divorce - and rediscovering herself and her own capabilities in the process. Along the journey of renovation she is joined by an array of characters, including two dogs and a rather adventurous cat, a smiling but absent-minded 'landlord', a quirky friend and confidante, and an olde worlde charmer whose mastery at the helm wins more than just her respect. Before long Val has to learn to cope with the strenuous demands of acting as Skipper's Mate during numerous nail-biting adventures -frequently with hilarious effect. When the Hoop, her rented home, is sold Valerie relishes the new challenge of hunting down the Vereeniging, another picturesque barge aboard which she builds herself a new home and learns that, when life on the waterways is threatened by rust and insurance critics, it is those who band together to help who make the lifestyle so worthwhile. Valerie's touchingly sincere story is one of discovery and friendship, endurance and love and, most importantly, never allowing the landlubbers to get you down!show more

Our customer reviews

Trading life in the fast lane of Johannesburg, Val packs all her worldly possessions aboard an historic Dutch barge and set about rebuilding both the boat and her life - rediscovering herself and her own capabilities in the process. Watery Ways is a book to appeal to everyone. Those who love, live and work on the water will empathise and enjoy the adventure of living an alternative lifestyle and for everyone else who hankers after a chance to escape, a dip into this well written book will take you into another world for a few hours. Valerie Poore takes the reader on a journey of discovery. You follow her as she takes her first tentative footsteps of living aboard, to the excitement of buying her first Dutch barge. In the process she learns the skills to renovate and preserve these historic vessels, embraces a new language, makes friends human and feline, overcomes disappointments and finds love. Water Ways grips the reader from the very first chapter. It is written with honesty and a huge amount of humour. 'The iciness of the water is shocking as I plunge to its depth and I flounder.....absurd thoughts flash through my mind, such as that my towel will get wet...' This is a book you can kick back and enjoy. Valerie's descriptions of life aboard took me straight into her life and as each chapter ended I wanted to know what happened next. The descriptions of the water ways of the Netherlands are an added extra - a travelogue from a different perspective - which had me wanting to visit these places. As to how the book ends well I will not spoil your pleasure of reading Watery Ways and a chance to travel along a different towpath for a pleasant hour to two.show more
