This, in the present day, is the more expedient, since among the middle and the humbler classes, there is a rising feeling of dissatisfaction that may issue in a chronic discontent; a persuasion that our instituting such days as this ia making the poor suffer for the especial comfort of the rich. Were you now to nip that feeling in the bud, it would be a Christian thing--might it not be a patriotic thing? Would you not show to the humblest in the land that our religion gives more than it exacts, and overpays all that sacrifice for the sake of its demands? I therefore cannot see any strength or force in the objections that have been urged against this day; or at least such strength and force as cannot easily be disposed of the moment you come to examine it. We are, depend upon it, amid the scenes of an unprecedented crisis. Disaster has followed on disaster, blow has been struck after blow; our noblest and our bravest sons, and the higher classes, have been in this matter the greatest sufferers, have dyed the green sods of the Crimea with their blood. Trade and commerce is paralysed; the weeds of weeping and woe are seen upon every street. If prayer be anything but a sham; if there be a God in heaven who is a spectator of the conflict; if there be an element in it higher than human; surely, surely it is the hour and the moment for appealing to that power, and asking him to show us wherein we have sinned, that we may confess it and have it forgiven; and to reveal unto us wherein we are deficient, that we may supply the deficiency, and go forward in the cause and service of God.
