Description

Retreating to his room at the Stay Clean Hostel, Afghan-war veteran Andrew Riley shuns therapy and washes down his prescription pills with whiskey. After an unprovoked act of violence lands him with a community service order and the possibility of a prison sentence, Riley decides that he must tell his story to someone. Tasked with helping to rebuild an old church, he meets Father Politkovskaya, a one-hundred and six year old Russian priest. The two men sit together inside the crumbling church, and Riley begins to tell his story. He is traumatised by the fate of his best friend and the Afghan lawyer he was sworn to protect. The priest is a good listener, but soon it becomes clear he has a story of his own. He, too, is haunted by the fate of his best friend, and of the Russian poet he met on route to Stalin's gulag. For both men, the past refuses to remain buried.show more
