And here is my reason: although there is not very much connection between physical and moral beauty, woman is apt to imagine that the ideal face presupposes the ideal soul and she immediately lends to the man whose beauty attracts her, a stock of moral qualities which he does not always possess. If she retain coolness and judgment enough to eventually recognize this, the disenchantment is great and the face which she had admired so much at first, seems to her insignificant, coarse or stupid. Tenderness based solely upon physical attraction is certainly neither estimable nor lasting, and I believe that we, all of us, have to a far greater degree the desire to be loved for whatever we may be worth morally than for one physical charm. I know of no better way to elaborate my thought than by referring to some personal.experiences which will corroborate my word. At one period of my life I wore a somewhat brilliant uniform, and having the strength and suppleness of body which come with constant exercise in sports, I wore it, perhaps, none too badly. When I went to a dance arrayed in all my trappings, even though I might be quite unknown, so soon as it became evident that I did not trample upon the toes of my partner in the waltz nor upon those of my neighbors, I was given opportunities enough to form a very good opinion of my precious person. Presentation followed upon presentation without stop, and I had only to choose my partners--when these, with a pretty affectation of unconsciousness, did not choose me themselves.
