This video on volcanoes is part of a series that brings natural history and environmental subjects to life. Through the use of multiple image live-action photography, graphics and animation techniques, viewers see natural events from a closer and more involved angle. The episode includes footage of real erupting volcanoes and actual earthquakes in action. Some of the volcano footage is startingly close - some captured by NASA's heat resistant robot, and some shot by renowned vulcanologists Maurice and Katia Kraft, who lost their lives pursuing the truth behind this subject. Specially created for this episode are an "active" 3D graphics volcano; a scale model of Pompeii and reconstructed scenes demonstrating the destructive effects of an earthquake in slow motion.
