" The rates would he more accurately stated if the deaths were compared with the children living of like ages. This has been donc later on, where tables are given showing, for a series of years, the death rates of children under 1 and under 5 from diseases to which they are particularly liable. However, taking the table as it stands, 'it will be seen that the disease during last year was about 75 per cent. less fatal than during the preceding five years. The high rates during the second and third periods were due to severe outbreaks in 1893 and 1898. Scarlet Fever.-In 1904 the number of deaths from this disease was 50, equivalent to a rate of 0'35 per 10,000 of the population, which is slightly above the rate during the previous five years.
