Such beings nobly were unfortunate, Deserving from the world a better fate, Because they bore injustice unto death, For never truth denying with a breath. Yes, such were heroes, martyrs of their age, Who knew the truth, and were content to wage For it a conflict fierce for conscience' sake, And end existence at the block or stake; But yet their deaths were cause of triumphs great, Coming at least for them alas, too late, And were the seeds which soon sprang up complete, And brought men flowers for glorious garlands sweet. F Oh! that they could have but returned to see The triumph of their woes, the victory Of good o'er ill, and join the joyous cry At conquered Satan falling from the sky; And yet the future to atone to them, Has deck'd their crowns of fame with many a gem And thus shown through the ages vast of time Th' untimely death of each was but a crime. Ah! there's no grander vision for the mind To dwell on than these martyrs of mankind, Who with no thought of self devoted fell, Not caring if their names should die as well; But GoD, Who rules o'er all in earth and heav'n, To these who lived and died for Him has giv'n An indestructible and lasting fame, Within the shrine of thought unto each name; And in the land of blessedness on high, Like stars within the region of its sky They shine transcendently with lustre bright Of deeds well worth a thousand stars in sight; Perish material stars, but not the fame Of martyrdom, the spirit of...
