It is not hatred which shall serve our cause tomorrow but only what' wisdom has been accumulated in these four years. It is true that we shall not be able to think back upon Germany without calling up our hatred of her; indeed, we should not wish to do so, for anger hath a privilege and so long as Germany continues to be Germany we cannot save our respect for God and do less than hate her. This is not the point, however; already there are those who would alter the perspective by fixing attention on this which is only a part of our understanding of the enemy, and it is the whole understanding which matters; what is of importance to the peace and right progression of the world is not that a. half century hence men and women shall hate the Hun as we today but that they shall understand him as clearly as we understand him at this moment when he is burning the villages of France in preparation for his next war. Nearly everything will make easy a recession from the naked view which today we face. The soft concealments of peace will veil the picture; schemes for leagues of nations--invitations, these, to shorten memory--will take hold on us; preachers of brotherly love--love that is more concerned with turning the other cheek than with laying down life for a friend--will dissuade us; above all, our naive preference to live only twenty-four hours at a time, oblivious of yesterday and tomorrow, will ever work to lead us from that eminence whence now we survey the world as a great map.
