Excerpt: ...noted above, there has been, for some years past, what is termed a Spring Meeting, at which Steeple Chases and private matches constitute the usual sporting attractions. This meeting is held about the end of March or beginning of April, towards the close of the hunting season, its principal supporters being the gentlemen of the Berkeley Hunt Club--a sporting fraternity--the members of which have periodical dinners at the Plough Hotel, whereat are discussed the arrangements of the chase and the turf connected with the neighbourhood of Cheltenham and the county. THE HUNTING APPOINTMENTS are a source of great attraction during the winter months, and induce many families to take up their residence in Cheltenham from October to April; having the promise of congenial occupation. The celebrated Fox Hounds of Earl Fitzhardinge come up from Berkeley Castle the 1st of November, and hunt the Cotteswold and Broadway countries all that month, as also January and March. The appointments of the pack are on the most princely scale, and there are few keener sportsmen than its noble owner, who is uniformly accompanied by an excellent and splendid field. The meets are generally published in the newspapers a week in advance.
