Review Text

Adventure on the high seas comes to young Tony Donnithorne in fine English sea story tradition as he puzzles out a mystery embroiling his father. Though the Donnithornes have been living on the moors under a false name, two evil looking strangers discover their whereabouts and one night Tony Donnithorne disappears with them. The chase is on. Threatened with the guardianship of a stern uncle, Tony runs off to sea and in a sequence of adventures- duty on a privateer, capture by the French, imprisonment, a meeting with his father and final escape-the still festering wounds to the Donnithorne honor are reopened, cured and finally healed forever. Not as ?? and dried as most juveniles, this examines the guilt of a man whose desire for family security had led him astray and, with its flowing style and dark moods of suspense, recalls something of Stevenson.
