Review Text

There's a huge generation gap between author and his characters in this utterly implausible tale about a jock caught up in the student political wars of the '60's. Not only does Fred Harbach Jr. throw the shot put and discus, at record distances, for Henry David Thoreau College, but for some inexplicable reason the Dean expects him to keep peace between the radicals and musclemen. Even more inexplicable is the fact that when the confrontation comes - in a pitched battle over the Science Building - everybody (including Fred's girl) thinks he beat up activist Herman Yorke, when in true martyr fashion he saved Herm's life by sacrificing his bod to his erstwhile athletic pals. Not only doesn't Fred get his B.A., but he loses the girl to guess who, and is now stuck playing pro football and evading the draft in Canada. The author's version of college lingo ("A do at Dickie" i.e. A dance at Emily Dickinson college) will make the average Yazoo barf, if the plot doesn't get cha first. (Kirkus Reviews)
