Review Text

Strictly for the highbrows, this autobiographical story by one of America's distinguished minor poets and anthologists. Written in free-wheeling vein, the book shuttles through the incidents of the poet's life, his undisciplined boyhood in alluring Savannah, his transplanting with his grandmother's death, to austere New Bedford, his era of revolt in Harvard, his spiritual homecoming to England, his slow rooting among New England relatives, and fragmentary references to his three wives and unnumbered affairs. The most felicitous stretches are when the telling approaches poetry in description, the sea, the English countryside; or when he brings his wit to bear on some trivial comedy of manners. But in the main the book lags and limps. Most of it has been said better. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
