The second volume of Mike Rimmer's three-part history of the Cairns hinterland focuses on the enormous contribution that John Moffat of Irvinebank made to the development of North Queensland. He was a successful mining entrepreneur whose business acumen led to the creation of towns such as Herberton, Irvinebank, Montalbion, Chillagoe and Mt Molloy. Unlike most company bosses Moffat was widely repected by his workers, so much so that the children of the town where he lived for 30 years (Irvinebank) are reputed to have ended their prayers with 'God bless John Moffat'.
