Review Text

Mystery, investigation, solution and a neat surprise twist, June Thomson delivers all the ingredients for the perfect crime book. It begins with the funeral of Richard Gilchrist, retired Deputy Head and model citizen. The ceremony is correct but there is little evidence of grieving by the widow. Their son, Luke Gilchrist is saddened by this apparent lack of warmth, sad too that there had been so little intimacy or affection between his father and himself but, when his father's best friend hands him a box of papers and swears him to secrecy, he realises why his father had remained so remote. The box contains letters that had been written to him over many years, letters that show he had had another love, another child and parallel life. As if this were not sufficiently disturbing, Luke also finds an envelope in the box containing a newspaper account of this other woman's murder and the stark information that the police were seeking her 'mystery' husband. The plot is based on a simple idea but its development is subtle and complex. June Thomson is a thoroughly competent practitioner. Her sympathetic character comes alive, Detective Chief Inspector Jack Finch is reliably intelligent and the settings ring true. In short, there is a story with a beginning a middle and a most satisfactory ending. (Kirkus UK)
