Excerpt: ...of the Old Testament a similar mode of expression may be observed.J I have already stated my conviction, that the Scriptures form the best commentary upon themselves. If the reader enquire what did Moses and other writers of the Old Testament Scriptures mean by the extraordinary mode of expression of plurality in unity which they used, I at once refer him to the New Testament, and he will there find the "Father, Son, and Spirit" to be the only living and true God--"the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob," the "Elohim" who "created all things," and" by whom all things consist." This is a fact which the learned Doctor cannot deny, and therefore, as is usual with Unitarian writers, he endeavours to set aside its force by "winging against it" a shaft of ridicule. But to pass forward from the dispensation of types and shadows to the clearer dispensation of Gospel light, how do we find this doctrine revealed in the New Testament? Do we not from the beginning of Matthew to the close of the Revelation, find the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit spoken of conjointly and separately, as God; and the attributes, and qualities, and properties which are given to one, ascribed to each and all. What does our Lord himself say? "If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and We will come unto him." John xiv. 23. Is not this language completely synonymous with that used by Jehovah in the creation?--"Let us make man in Our image." And again, when investing the Apostles with their commission?--The Hebrew terms rendered in the English" God created," might be literally represented in the Latin, by "Diicreavit"--in English" the Gods...
