Excerpt: ...sacred writings.--To prove the strict unity and unrivalled supremacy of God the Father, they conceive no stronger testimony can be given than that of Jesus himself and his apostles. Thus when V a Scribe asked him, which is the first commaiichnent of all, he answered, " The Jirst of all the commandments is, Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord." Mark xii. 29. Why catlest thou me good? none is good suve orse, that is God. Luke xviii. 19. "This is life eternal that they might know thee the only true God, and Jetu Christ whom thou hast sent." John xvii. 3. "But to us there is but one God the Father, of whom are all i lungs, and we in him and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things and we by him, or for or through whom are all things, and we for or through him. 1 Cor. viii. 6. "My Father is greater than L John xiv. 28. I ascend to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.. xx. 17, "The head of Christ is God." 1 Cor. xi. 3.-One God and Father of all who is above all." Ephes, iv. 6. "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." 1 Tim. ii. 5. In support of the plain and obvious meaning of these passages, they refer to the gospels at large, in almost every page of which our Saviour acknowledges, in unequivocal terms, his inferiority to God. He speaks of hiin as the Being from whom he received every thing, who had sent hiua to make known the truth and enabled him to work miracles in proof of his mission. He taught his disciples to pray to hiin, and upon various occasions his own prayers were addressed unto him.
