We can perceive, indeed, with what interest he dwelt on the fact, that between us and the Redeemer there is an identity of nature; since He has allied Himself to our humanity, and sympathises with us in our feelings and conflicts. We may go yet further, and affirm, that Christ regards His people even as a part of Himself, and loves them as such with a peculiar tenderness. But here we pause. We can only catch a glimpse of the "great mystery," which even an inspired apostle, in his reverent meditations, left to be unfolded in the clearer light of eternity. 2. The conjugal relation requires, in order to its formation, mutual consent. It is a voluntary union, formed after thought and deliberation, and, as such, solemnly and publicly avowed. So, too, the union between Christ and His church involves mutual consent. The Saviour, if we may reverently speak so, cheerfully binds Himself to the soul that relies on His atonement and mediation. In doing this, He is but carrying out His gracious purposes, and accomplishing the great design for which He stooped from the throne of His glory, and submitted to the shame and suffering of the cross. There is no reluctance, on His part, to come into union with the soul that closes. with His overtures, and embraces Him as its portion. And on our part, there must be sincere and hearty consent, in order to our union with Christ. Thoughtfully and deliberately, regarding not only the privileges which Christ confers, but the claims which He has on our devotion and obedience, we must give ourselves to Him.
