Review Text

Val McDermid has slowly but surely been pulling herself to the top of the crime-writing tree with a series of thrillers that combine gritty authenticity with sharp, unsentimental psychological acumen. Her writing is quite unlike that of the twin queens of crime, P D James and Ruth Rendell: less middle-class, more urbane. And her subject matter is often the stuff of the literary novel: serious issues are utilised in a compelling but always thoughtful fashion. This is a superior piece of writing, full of her characteristic hard-edged analysis of the darker side of human behaviour. Returning from California to research a thesis on the place of women in the trade union movement, journalist Lindsay Gordon becomes the prime suspect when union boss Tom 'Union' Jack, not noted for his progressive attitude to women, falls to his death from a tenth-floor window. Gordon has to call on all her skills (and more) to prove her innocence - and find the solution to Jack's death. McDermid's more feminist novels always avoid any sense of proselytising - points may be made, but they are never foregrounded at the expense of her primary objective: to entertain. She is a first-rate writer, and her skills are always at the service of the narrative. A particular pleasure is the dialogue: crackling and sardonic. (Kirkus UK)
