Review Text

The setting in this stunning new novel by Fyfield is all important - it's Warbling, a small, old-fashioned seaside town where the sound of grey sea sucking or crashing against the pier is the background to every character's life and a compelling strand in the plot. One freezing winter night an American gets off the train and flutters this tight little community. Henry Evans fell in love with a girl called Francesca when they were travelling in India during their youth but when her father died and she needed him to accompany her back to England, he let her down. Now a life time later he has come to find her, to say how sorry he is and maybe to start loving her again. But his introduction to the town is horrid - his hotel is flooded, and the wind and rain batter him and he ends up in a decidedly odd boarding house. Worse is to come. Francesca's solicitor tells him that she is serving life sentence for the murder of her five-year-old son. Gradually Henry comes to terms with what he has been told but he cannot accept it without carrying out his own investigation. From the first page of a Fyfield novel the reader nervously waits for a monster to be introduced, someone so deformed in mind or body that he will terrorize us until the last page. Here there seem to be plenty of candidates, a nest of secret people, some eccentric and all of them unpredictable. But how to be sure? As the characters are developed we begin to like them all. Fyfield knows how to build suspense, how to keep us turning the pages while dreading what we might discover. (Kirkus UK)
