Review Text

It's an ill wind that blows no good (and a host of other homilies) in this fable of the bad miller who repents after being shamed by the kindness of the neighbor he tried to undo. Corresponding to the natures of their owners, the two windmills are white and gray until the terrible storm which destroys the latter leaves the former untouched (protected by the poplar trees the bad miller planted to deflect the wind); then both are white (the gray one rebuilt) in recognition of the bad miller's reform. The color key is the key to the simplicism of the story; the bright colors of the Dutch countryside are the only compensation. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
