Description

A field of strawberries in Kent ... And sitting in it two caravans - one for the men and one for the women. The residents are from all over: miner's son Andriy is from the old Ukraine, while sexy young Irina is from the new: they eye each other warily. There are the Poles Tomasz and Yola, two Chinese girls and Emanuel from Malawi. They're all here to pick strawberries in England's green and pleasant land. But these days England's not so pleasant for immigrants. Not with Russian gangster-wannabes like Vulk, who's taken a shine to Irina and thinks kidnapping is a wooing strategy. And so Andriy - who really doesn't fancy Irina, honest - must set off in search of that girl he's not in love with.

Our customer reviews

"Having read Lewycka's first book, which I enjoyed, I found this second book to have much more depth and realism. I became caught up in the lives of these slightly stereotypical people who seemed to cope remarkably well in the dismal environments they found themselves in. The description of chicken farming was truly appaling in places, particularly when they have to be cleared out in double quick time to meet the supermarket requirements of a two for one offer. The treatment of the chickens was shocking but what was most telling was how a bunch of ordinary blokes (regardless of nationality) could become immune to what they were doing. One of the baddies, a young Ukraininan who is making his way by human trafficing, seems to be doing it to raise himself out of the mire having himself been dehumanised by his own experiences as a child. A much more thought provoking book than the first, I will never be able to enjoy a supermarket strawberry or a shrink wrapped chicken in the same way again!"show more
