About John Loofbourow MD

The author is a physician who graduated BS MD from the University of Minnesota, and from California State University Sacramento with an MA in Spanish Literature. His childhood was lived in 13 small mining towns scattered across the globe, yet Northern California has always been the center of his life. He interned at Gorgas Hospital, Panama Canal Zone, and began a surgery residency in St Paul Minnesota, but was drafted by the US Navy for aviation medicine on a West Pacific Sea Plane Tender (USS AVP 49). After 8 years in a Northern California General Practice, he became acutely aware of the health problems among children of migrant farm workers, devoting the next 8 years to organizing and operating free rural and inner city clinics, and completing a fellowship in Bio-statistics and Epidemiology at U Minnesota. He is retired. His last 22 years of active practice were in Emergency Medicine. He has published professional articles, chiefly on rabies vaccines, and infectious disease. He publishes essays, articles, and poetry in SSVMedicine, a publication of the Sierra Sacramento Medical Society, and on his blogs: and 'The Melba Notebooks' is his recent book about the relationships among children, friends and the medical professions when parents age and die at home. Dr. Loofbourow is married, has 7 children, and lives in Northern California.
