Review Text

Even before Hannah Brand realizes what's happening, you catch on that the problem in her new suburban neighborhood is anti-Semitism - and that's why Cynthia Sherwood labels the other girls on the block as "common." The rejection at school (including arithmetic tests on Jewish holidays) is disturbing and dinner table conversation at home centers on the immediate problem of settling a family of German refugees in town (this is 1939). The situation is serious; still, one is hardly prepared for Hannah's discovery - that the Nazi nut next door has kidnapped none-too-bright Billy Herman with the idea of turning him into his personal storm trooper. This is shortly before Cynthia Sherwood, leader of the class "Yankees," is recognized as Simcha Shapiro, cousin of Hannah's friend Shirley from the Bronx. If Hannah's wisecracking was sharper throughout, then the manic hypocrisy of the locals might also seem funnier. But Hannah often comes across as nasty rather than just formidably feisty, and you can't help being annoyed by the way the author plays with stereotypes and lectures against them at the same time. Glibly amusing nonetheless. (Kirkus Reviews)
