Excerpt: ...an increase of velocity of over 300 feet per second for the last reduction of 1% lb. pressure, from 2% lb. to I lb. absolute pressure, as against about 560 for a reduction of 7% lb. pressure, from IO lb. to 2% lb. For this reason there is a large field for turbines in utilizing the exhaust steam from factories, etc., otherwise wasted into the atmosphere; and a large number have already been fitted for this 86 TURBINES purpose, thus enabling a large economy to be obtained for very little cost. The air--pumps, both wet and dry if fitted, deliver their contents into an open-topped tank.called the feed, or feedwater, tank, from which the air is' allowed to escape as freely as possible through an open pipe, and the water is saved for feeding the boiler. The feed pump takes its suction from the lower part of the feed tank, and delivers the water through the feed pipe and a non-return valve into the boiler ready for another and similar cycle of operations when converted into steam. Some small proportion of the water leaks away and is not returned to the boiler, and from time to time a certain quantity has to be added to the water in the tank to make up the loss. In round numbers for each 1,000 horse-power of an engine some 120 tons, or 26,880 gallons, of water are converted into steam by the boilers every 24 hours; of this quantity in good practice not more than 2 tons, or 448 gallons, are lost by leakage. For high-pressure boilers, sea-water cannot be safely or economically used continuously, and to produce the fresh water necessary for making up the feed-water loss, as well as for drinking and other purposes, an evaporator is used in which sea-water is converted into fresh-water steam, and then condensed in a distiller ready for use....show more
